Death and Grieving: The Culture of Loss
Tuesday, April 6, 2010 - 7:00pm
Event Details:
It makes no difference, so I've been told
Where the body lies when life grows cold
But grant, I pray, one wish to me
O bury me not on the lone prairie
I've often wished to be laid when I die
By the little church on the green hillside
By my father's grave, there let mine be
O bury me not on the lone prairie
This mournful request in a cowboy ballad exemplifies a concern seen in many cultures around the world, the desire for one?s physical remains to be buried close to home, while demonstrating how graves define home. Different cultures across the world have their customs as to how to deal with the physical remains, but in Russia, for example, a rich burial tradition developed over centuries combining both pagan and Christian elements. Of particular importance is the visiting of graveyards, the homes of the dead. The Soviet Union did much to liquidate the religious faiths of its citizens, nevertheless, certain rituals persisted, notably those rituals and practices relating to death and graveyards. I will be examining the rituals of death in Russia and Estonia and will be taking you on a visual tour of some graveyards. I will examine a rich culture expressed in graveyards and examine how the rituals of death root the living and define home. By the end, you may be asking not to be buried in the lone prairie, but the forest and steppe of Russia.

You Say Party! We Say Die! at UNBC with Makeout Videotape
Vancouver dance-rockers You Say Party! We Say Die! will be bringing their internationally-acclaimed sound to Prince George on April 10.
The band is in the middle of an international tour, and their Prince George concert takes place between an appearance at the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas, and a two-month journey across Europe. They are touring in support of their third album, XXXX, which has been amassing a new fan base and critical acclaim since its release last September. It has continuously placed in the top 10 of national campus radio charts, as well as receiving a favourable review from the notoriously hard-to-please music website Pitchfork media.
The show is being presented by UNBC's campus radio station CFUR 88.7, in partnership with the Northern Undergraduate Student Society and with financial support from Northern Toyota.
The band will be joined by up-and-comers Makeout Videotape, also of Vancouver, whose debut single "Heatwave" is currently getting rotation countrywide.
Tickets are limited and going fast. They are available for $10 at UNBC from the CFUR Radio and NUGSS offices, downtown at Books and Company, or online at http://cfur.ca/tickets.
This is an all-ages show starting at 7:00 pm at the NUSC event space at UNBC on Saturday, April 10. Tickets are $10.
Venue: NUSC Event Space at UNBC (beside the Thirsty Moose Pub)

Gambol Everything for Love
Gambol Everything For Love is an original play researched and edited by Brian Belsham, involving the authorships of Rumi, Hyemeyohsts Storm, Joseph Campell, Ken Wilber and Brian Belsham. It concerns and celebrates from their many perspectives-what it means to love, respect and consider the beliefs of others on the human scale.
Trish Halsey Belsham the director has created a visual feast of colours with costuming by Teresa Cavannaugh, in this multi-disciplinary performance using contemporary dance, theatre and voice to showcase the talents of performers from three different communities: Prince George, Vanderhoof and Ft, St. James.
The evening also offers a unique approach to scenery hung with the dazzeling irridescent mobiles designed and created by Wendy Young, artisan and executive director of the Prince George Arts Council - who will be auctioning these beautiful art pieces at the end of the performance to the audience.
The performance will be held at the Prince George Playhouse.
Adults $17 - Students and Seniors $14.

Dr. Charles Helm at Books & Co
Mark April 23, 7 p.m. on the calendar for a fascinating event in ArtSpace as we welcome Dr. Charles Helm as he introduces the new book, The Forgotten Explorer: Samuel Prescott Fay's 1914 Expedition to the Northern Rockies. Fay and his party set out from Jasper on June 26, 1914 with five saddle horses and 16 pack horses. After a treacherous, slogging journey of 1,200 kilometres through wild, uncharted country, they reached their destination on Oct. 15, 1914, with the outfit completely intact. Learn more about this extraordinary adventure from Dr. Helm as he relates exerpts from Fay's journals, and shares slides of the actual locations of the expedition. |
